Will US achieve herd immunity as FDA permits use of COVID-19 vaccines for kids

Food and Drug Administration approved the request of Pfizer-BioNtech, allowing their COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use for kids aged 12-15. This permit will allow states in the United States to get middle school students vaccinated for COVID-19 before the end of fall. The public health officials and experts in the United States stated that this move will accelerate the efforts of the country to drive down the number of cases and infections.

The vaccine by Pfizer-BioNTech is already authorised for people aged 16 and above. The vaccine advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will hold a meeting on 12 May in order to review how the shots will be administered for kids. After the final approval from CDC, the vaccine distribution in adolescents will begin by this week itself.

However, it is understood by the FDA Commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock that parents might feel a little hesitant to vaccinate their kids. She assured the parents that the agency has taken a rigorous and thorough review of the entire data available to them before proceeding further with the approval.

Th company earlier stated that the vaccines are found to be 100% effective. The clinical trial proceeded with more than 2,000 adolescents participating in the same. The statement further confirmed that the vaccine had a ‘robust’ antibody response on kids as compared to earlier trials on young adults and teens. The companies also added that vaccinating children against COVID-19 will be the beginning to end the pandemic.

The herd immunity can also be achieved in the given community when children get vaccinated too, claims health experts in the country.

Will US achieve herd immunity in kids?

Children in the United States contribute to 20% of the entire population. And in order to achieve herd immunity, the country must vaccinate 70% of the population against COVID-19. As some of the adults in the country are refusing to get vaccinated against the virus, it becomes important to administer adolescents to jog closer to herd immunity.
