Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, are hogging headlines, and how! Although the couple has been in the news since they parted ways with Buckingham Palace, there no-holds-barred revelations about Britain’s Royal Family on the popular Oprah Winfrey Show have caused a stir worldwide. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex held back no punches as they revealed hitherto unknown aspects of royal life.
The opening up of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on the Oprah Winfrey Show has put the British monarchy under unprecedented public scrutiny.
“How would you feel about the Palace hearing you speak your truth today”? That was the million-dollar question the world’s biggest host Winfrey had for Meghan.
Meghan’s reply was: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still be silent if there is an active role that the firm (calling Royal family a firm) is playing is perpetuating false blood about us. And if that comes with the risk of losing things, I mean, there’s a lot that’s been lost already”.
Meghan Markle claimed that while she was pregnant with Archie, concerns were raised with Prince Harry about how dark his skin colour would be when he will be born. However, Meghan did not disclose the name of person who voiced those concerns: “I think that would be very damaging to them”, she said.
But, when prodded by Winfrey, Harry refused to share the details of the conversation but, when Winfrey prompted, Harry said that the questions were along the lines of: “What will the kids look like?”
The Duchess of Sussex said that she had suicidal thoughts during her time as a working royal.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought. And I remember how Harry just cradled me. “She claimed that she even asked the palace for help and was they denied for it saying there’s nothing we can do to protect you because you’re not a paid employee of the institution.”
Meghan said that she said that she had been “silenced” from the moment she started dating Harry. “It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected but … they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”
Oprah when asked if she was not supported by the powers that be, her response to that was: “There’s the family, and then there are the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalize that because the queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me.”
When Oprah asked Harry whether he would have stepped back from royal duties if Meghan wasn’t in the scenario.
“No,” Harry said. He said he was trapped, but that he didn’t know he was trapped. Only through his relationship with Meghan, he realised that he and his family were all trapped inside an oppressive system.
“I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped,” he said.
Oprah then prompted how exactly was he trapped. To which Harry replied, “Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are. My father, my brother, they are trapped,” he said.
The relationship with the brother is “Space” at the moment and time will heal things hopefully, said Harry. About his relationship with his father, Harry said, ‘I feel really let down by my father’ who also had at one time stopped taking my calls amid his revealed plans to step outside from royal duties.
Prince Charles is now taking his calls but “there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened” and the pair have “lots to work through”, he said. “I feel really let down,” Harry said. “He’s been through something similar; he knows what pain feels like.”
It was on 8 January 2020 Prince Harry and his wife Meghan announced that they will step back from Royal Family as senior royals and work to become financially independent to make a progressive new role. Queen Elizabeth II, the grandmother of Harry, has allowed Prince Harry and Meghan to move part-time to Canada during a “period of transition”.
