All You Need to Know About IPL 2020 in UAE

The Indian Premier League 2020 which was postponed in March 2020 due to Coronavirus outbreak seems to be back on track. While BCCI is yet to announce the final word on IPL being held in UAE, verbal confirmation from IPL chairman Brijesh Patel has given a chance for franchisees to prepare for the ‘new normal of IPL’. Mr Patel affirmed that the tournament will be held from 19 September 2020 to 8 November 2020 in UAE giving very few details on IPL 2020 schedule. Several media outlets have released match timings that could be considered by the board.

IPL Governing Council is expected to declare a full schedule of IPL 2020 by 2 August 2020. A total of 60 matches will be played in UAE in a span of 51 days. There is no confirmation whether the games will be played closed doors or with some spectators. However, it can be noted that the cash-rich league might opt for a closed-door tournament for the safety of players and to successfully host the competition.

Why has IPL been shifted to UAE?

IPL 2020 was due to start on 29 March 2020 with a match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). It was whitewashed after the country imposed a COVID-19 lockdown from 24 March 2020 onwards. Coronavirus cases in India are still on the rise and no major tournament can be safely held during such circumstances. UAE, on the other hand, has gained excellent control over the outbreak. The country is reporting fewer daily infections now than earlier.

13th edition of the Indian Premier League may be held without much fanfare, but it could give a boost to cricket tournaments globally with a successful run in UAE.

The Challenge

With eight teams playing in IPL 2020, hundreds of players and staff would need to reach UAE by end of August 2020. Due to COVID-19 related restrictions, players arriving from different parts of the world might need to go for a mandatory quarantine before they start practising with their teammates. IPL 2020 schedule might also make necessary adjustments for COVID-19 travel, quarantine, and tests for players and staff of all teams. Conducting a global tournament will be a major challenge for the organisers amid the pandemic scare. With the skill and promptness, UAE government has tackled the pandemic, it can be said that they can hit this event for a sixer too!
