Highlights of ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020
The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 was held from 17 January to 9 February 2020 in South Africa. This was the 13th edition of Under -19 Cricket World Cup which witnessed participation of 16 teams from around the world.
The teams were split into four groups from which top two teams advanced to Super League and bottom two teams progressed to Plate League.
The showdown to the semi-finals
Defending champions India has been the most successful team at this level. India beat Pakistan in the first semi-final by ten wickets securing its place in the finals. Yashavi Jaiswal scored an unbeaten century against Pakistan in this match.
On the other hand, in the second semi-final, Bangladesh decimated New Zealand by six wickets, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy scoring a century.
The third-place play-off match between New Zealand and Pakistan was cancelled due to rain without a single ball being bowled declaring Pakistan in third place, depending on scores claimed in the group stage.
The showdown to the finals
Speaking of U19 World Cup finals, India faced off Bangladesh and opted to bat first. Team India was all out in 47.2 overs, leaving chase of 178 runs for the Bangladesh team.
The target was however revised to 170 runs in 46 overs due to rain. Bangladesh chased down the target in 42.1 overs beating India by three wickets, thus clinching World Cup U-19 2020 title.
Bangladeshi boys were impressive throughout the tournament by showing their mettle in the finals against their favourites.
Performance of Yashasvi Jaiswal truly defined the positives for India for its brilliance throughout the tournament. He scored 88 runs in the final and won the title of ‘Player of the Series’. Ravi Bishnoi, on the other hand, surely bamboozled batsmen of Bangladesh by picking four wickets in the match.
The positive for Bangladesh was their first-ever global cricket title, proving that they have TRULY ARRIVED! Their success in sports also contributes to the development of the country contradicting the narration of being a poor and desperate nation.
Just when everything was ending at peace, two Indian and three Bangladesh players were handed suspension points for an ugly on-field confrontation after the finals. India’s Akash Singh And Ravi Bishnoi along with Bangladesh's Md.
Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, and Rakibul Hasan were found guilty of breaching ICC Code of Conduct. ICC confirmed in a statement that above mentioned players were charged with violating Article 2.21 of the code, whilst Bishnoi was charged a further of breaching, under Article 2.5.
Sometimes first win can hit you hard, and that’s probably what happened with Bangladesh Under -19 cricket team. Nonetheless, the tournament witnessed a roller coaster glimpse of unexpected wins and defeats. And now with IPL hitting next month, cricket is definitely going to turn the curiosity to extreme levels.
