World Cancer Day is an internationally recognised day marked on 4 February. The day is marked to raise awareness about cancer while encouraging and educating people about its prevention, treatment, and detection. The day is led by UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, which was written in 2008. 

The World Cancer Day is considered as an opportunity to rally the community and end injustice against those suffering from cancer. World Cancer Day is observed by the United Nations and targets misinformation to reduce the stigma surrounding the subject of matter. There are multiple initiatives on World Cancer Day that help in implementing support to those who are or were affected by cancer.

World Cancer Day was first established on 4 February 2000 at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer for the New Millenium. The summit was held in Paris. The Charter of Paris Against Cancer included an article highlighting the anniversary of documents, officially signed as World Cancer Day by the General Director of UNESCO, Kōichirō Matsuura and French President Jacques Chirac in 2009.

Themes of World Cancer Day 

This year World Cancer Day will be celebrated under the theme ‘I am and I will’. UICC will be giving voice to the researchers, doctors, nurses, advocates, volunteers, and other caregivers who worked through the COVID-19 pandemic in the past 12 months. The theme was also marked in the year 2019 and 2020.
