Thank You Nurses – International Nurses Day 2021

It is a well-accepted fact that as the world cannot function without doctors, a doctor cannot function without nurses. To honour the profession of Nursing, the International Council of Nurses chose 12 May as the day for acknowledging the contribution of the nursing community. Been celebrated since 1974, the International Nurses Day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, an English social reformer and founder of modern nursing.

But why is the profession of Nursing so important for the world? The answer is just as old as the medical profession itself. Ever since antiquity, medical professionals have relied on trained assistants to ensure care and para-medical support for their patients. Hence, nurses have been an integral part of the healthcare system. However, in addition to the medical support, the nursing community also offers emotional comfort to the patients. For any person, hospitals and healthcare facilities could be daunting places, and it all falls on the shoulders of the nursing staff to make sure that comfort and confidence are guaranteed to the patients during their treatment.

Additionally, years of experience, working with doctors, and rendering care makes the nursing community across the world a crucial part of the healthcare system. Nurses ensure a lot more than the doctors – feeding the patients, changing their blankets and clothes, cleaning them, monitoring their vitals, and most importantly, providing emotional support. Moreover, what recent times have highlighted is that the nursing community is always prepared to work in challenging and dangerous settings. Many do not acknowledge the work done by nurses in war zones or remote areas. Nurses provide care in situations where a normal person would never even imagine stepping in. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has also been a display of brilliance and courage from the nursing community. They have singlehandedly supported medical professionals, offered much-needed care, worked in situations with dwindling resources, and risked their lives to keep others safe and sound.

If nothing else, the nursing staff is the epitome of humanity – providing critical care and showering compassion all the time. While their contributions may not receive much praise, their smiling faces speak scores of their humility and dedication. So, the next time you visit a loved one at a hospital, just bring a box full of chocolates for the smiling professional standing strong beside them.
