China expands e-currency pilot to hospitals, subways

Chinese authorities have stated that the nation’s e-currency system Digital Currency/Electronic Payment (DCEP) is already running a pilot batch in Shenzhen, Suzhou, Chengdu, Xiong’an and Beijing. The programme has been extended to 50,000 users, 800 offline shops, and 2,300 online retailers. The system uses a digital wallet, and doesn’t require a bank account and transactions can be made offline as well.
